Our Wooden Floor Options for Your Home

We offer a choice of three stunning, premium wood floor options to suit your home and budget: Engineered hardwood, performance laminate, and luxury vinyl plank, each designed to meet differing room and budhigh-get needs.

Engineered Hardwood

Real hardwood bonded to an engineered core. You get all the looks of real wood with a lower cost and more versatile installation options.

High-Performance Laminate

Durable and cost-effective, laminate looks like real wood with incredible fidelity in the surface, while being significantly cheaper, more stable, and having impressive scratch resistance for high-traffic applications.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

Fully waterproof flooring that features embossed wood texture for a very natural look. A great option for basements, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and other areas where moisture may be an issue.

Why Choose Engineered & Wooden-Look Flooring?

Engineered and wood-look flooring give you the beautiful, natural tones and feel of a hardwood floor without the cost, while being moisture-resistant, easier to clean, and simpler to maintain.

Real-Wood Appearance at an Accessible price Point

Whether it's engineered wood or the wood-look options, you get a convincing appearance of real wood flooring at a lower cost than a genuine hardwood floor.

Superior Moisture and Humidity Resistance

Both engineered wood and LVP offer moisture-resistant performance, avoiding issues with expansion and contraction through humidity changes.

Versatile Installation Throughout Your Home

From basements to bedrooms and everything in between, you can create a sweeping statement with wood-look floors in every room of your home.

Low-Maintenance, Highly Scratch-Resistant Flooring

With factory-applied wear layers and scratch-resistant finishes, these flooring options are built to take the knocks and wear of family life and stay looking as fresh as the day they were installed.

The PHS Construction Process for Wooden Floors

With five clear steps, our process takes you from idea to a beautifully finished floor, as simply as possible.

01

Subfloor Assessment and Moisture Testing

We inspect your existing subfloor for condition, moisture content, and levelness. Level subfloors and moisture management are key to finished floor quality.

02

Subfloor Levelling and Structural Remediation

If there is any issue with leveling, structure, or moisture migration in the subfloor, we will take care of it as necessary to ensure a smooth, perfect installation.

03

Essential Wood Acclimation

We deliver the flooring and leave it to acclimate in the room environment in compliance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. This is scheduled into the project timeline.

04

Precision Layout and Installation

Planks are laid to our established plan, with precision cuts to ensure a perfect fit around any obstacles or walls, fitted as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

05

Trim, Transitions, and Final Inspection

All thresholds are installed at transitions, and moldings are fitted. Final clean and inspection to complete the install once you are happy.

Solving Subfloor Challenges in Older NJ and PA Homes

Older homes bring unique subfloor challenges. We take care of all of them before installing any flooring.

We identify uneven or bouncy joists and remedy the issue before flooring installation. You can’t hide structural issues with new flooring.

We check basement slabs for moisture before suggesting floating or glue-down wood-look products.

We confirm your concrete subfloor is compatible with your chosen flooring. Including any moisture barriers where required.

Any squeaking subfloor panels or movement of any kind is remedied before installation rather than letting the new floor cover it up.

We identify and address any moisture concerns in crawlspaces or foundations, as if left, they will eventually affect any flooring installed above.

What Affects the Cost of Wooden Flooring Installation?

Every project is unique, but here are the factors that impact the overall cost of your new floor.

Square Footage and Room Complexity

The larger the area, the less per square foot it costs thanks to labor efficiencies. Small rooms, stairs, and complex layouts need a higher level of labor per square foot, adding to the costs.

Subfloor Preparation

We assess the subfloor and remedy any issues, install underlayment, levelling compounds, and moisture barriers as needed for any specific installation. More work means more costs.

Old Floor Demolition and Removal

We’ll remove the old floor and take away the debris. We include this in our pricing as a separate itemized cost.

Layout Complexity

Simple layouts are less labor-intensive and cost less. More complex designs, with intricate patterns that require significant cuts and shaping, increase labor requirements and cost more.

Project Timeline and What To Expect

We proceed with each project in defined phases, taking you from first assessment to final walkthrough. Knowing how this works makes planning your home much easier.

Consultation and Measurement

Our home visit includes a consultation on the style and type of flooring you want, your budget, a detailed measurement of the rooms, and finally an assessment of the subfloor condition.

Material Selection

We offer an extensive range of wood flooring designs, various wear grades, and finishes. We'll present samples so you can find the ideal option for your home and budget.

Subfloor Preparation

We clean the subfloor, ready for inspection. If we find damage or unevenness, we address it at this point, then proceed with moisture barriers and underlayment if required.

Acclimation & Site Pre

Wooden flooring is delivered to the site and stored in the room to acclimate as per the manufacturer's recommendations. We will then remove furniture and prepare the area for the new flooring.

Installation

We use nail-down, floating, or glued methods of installation depending on the material and situation, whichever is best for your floor.

Trim & Transitions

We finish the install with transitions, trims, and moldings, followed by a thorough clean before final inspection for your approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

The simple answers to the most popular questions we get asked about wooden flooring installation.

What is the difference between engineered hardwood, laminate, and LVP?

Engineered hardwood features a real wood surface bonded to an artificial core. LVP is a fully synthetic waterproof flooring that features an embossed texture layer that looks like wood in a very realistic way. Laminate flooring uses photorealistic printing and a resin layer for the wood look and durability. Each has its own best use applications; we will help you find the right product for your project.

How long does wood acclimation take before installation?

Acclimation allows the flooring to normalise its physical characteristics in the room. Without this step, the flooring can expand or contract after installation, causing gaps or buckling in the final look. Some products require very little acclimation, while others need up to 72 hours in the room. You should always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for acclimation.

Can engineered hardwood be sanded and refinished?

Some engineered hardwood products can be lightly sanded and refinished; it depends on how thick the wear layer is and the kind of core used. Because wear layers can be quite thin, you may only be able to sand and refinish once. You can check manufacturer recommendations to know what each product allows.

How are transitions from tile to wood or carpet to wood handled?

We use transition strips, T-moldings, and threshold pieces to bridge the difference in height between different floor finishes. Each transition is carefully matched to an appropriate solution to ensure continuity between all floors in the space.

What wooden flooring options are best for homes with pets?

LVP, which can be selected with very thick wear layers, offers the highest-rated scratch and moisture resistance, ideal for pets. Engineered hardwood that uses harder woods as a surface, or a UV-cured aluminum oxide finish, also offers durable performance. We will walk you through all available options during our consultation.

Can wooden flooring be installed in basements or over concrete slabs?

Yes, but LVP is the most suited to lower-grade subflooring and moisture that may be present. There are engineered hardwood products that are approved for concrete floors, but require vapor barriers during installation. Laminate is the least suitable, as it requires a specific moisture barrier and can be unforgiving of poorer subfloor quality.

Do you recommend acoustic or sound-dampening underlayments?

Yes, as it can have a significant impact on sound performance for floating installations. The type of underlayment depends on the subfloor and flooring product selected; we always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

What are relative humidity and moisture testing requirements for wooden flooring?

For a professional, quality installation, the moisture conditions for both the subfloor and the room must be verified prior to any flooring being fitted. The acceptable levels of moisture vary between products; we always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Is wooden flooring compatible with radiant heating systems?

Some are. There are both engineered hardwood, laminate, and LVP flooring products designed for this application, subject to specific temperature ranges as outlined by the manufacturer.

Does PHS Construction use in-house crews or subcontractors?

We only use our in-house flooring experts for installing any wooden flooring in your home. We never use subcontractors for this work, so you can be confident in the consistent quality of everything we do.
