- Understanding the System
How a Steam Shower Works
The Generator
This is the component that produces steam for your steam shower. It requires a dry, heated space for installation close to the shower, usually fitted nto a vanity cabinet or similar.
The Steam Head
This is where the steam comes from inside the shower. It is positioned low and arranged so steam is never blown directly at you for maximum comfort and safety.
Precision Controls
A digital panel inside the shower allows for precise controls of steam generation, shower temperatures and session duration. Premium models also add per-user presets, lighting controls, aromatherapy delivery and built- in audio playback.
The Enclosure
The shower itself is not like a traditional shower cubicle. It has to be sealed to retain steam on all sides and the ceiling, and slowed to ensure condensation runs away cleanly. The glass door must seal perfectly too.
- Honest Answer First
Can You Convert an Existing Shower to a Steam Shower?
Possibly. It's a question most people try to avoid, but here’s the reality of converting to steam showers:
A conversion is realistic when:
- The existing shower was recently built with full waterproofing
- The ceiling height and structure allow for condensation runoff
- There is a viable location for the generator nearby
- The glass can be replaced with a ceiling-height sealed enclosure
A rebuild is the honest answer when:
- The existing shower only has standard waterproofing. A regular shower is waterproofed against water running down the walls. A steam shower must be vapor-sealed against pressurized moisture vapor. This includes the ceiling, which ordinary showers leave unsealed entirely.
- Retrofitting vapor-sealing onto finished tile is not possible. The enclosure needs to be fitted directly to the studs.
The reality is that in most cases, a conversion won’t be possible. We always ask clients to consider the addition of a steam shower during a bathroom remodel, as the prep work for it will all be done anyway as part of the work, making it more cost effective to include in a wider project.
- Built Right from the Start
The Mechanics of a Professional Steam Shower Installation
Steam is unforgiving of shortcuts. Vapor finds any gap in the waterproofing and cubicle seals. A badly built steam shower damages the walls around it. Here’s our process to ensure perfect performance.
Framing for Steam
The ceiling gets framed with a slope, usually around one to two inches per foot, so that the condensation is directed down the walls rather than allowed to drip. The bench gets framed in, and the enclosure is sized against the generator's rated volume.
Vapor-Sealing Every Surface
All surfaces, including walls and ceiling, have a continuous vapor-rated membrane applied over a cement backer board. This goes beyond standard shower waterproofing, forming a vapor tight seal. It is the most important step in creating a steam shower that lasts, instead of one that ruins the wall cavity.
Dedicated Electrical Circuit
Residential steam generators run on 208V or 240V and require their own dedicated, protected circuit. In older homes this can involve panel work, which will have been priced into your estimate during our site visit.
Plumbing the Steam Loop
A steam shower requires a water supply line to the generator, a steam line to the steam head, and a drain line for the generator's flush cycle. Generator placement is always chosen for accessibility, so maintenance is simple.
Non-Porous Tile, Honestly Specified
Porcelain and ceramic are ideal steam surfaces. Natural stone looks spectacular but absorbs heat and moisture. As a result, choosing this finish requires roughly double the generator size, and needs routine maintenance to the sealing. We can offer any finish you want, but will always be honest about the downsides.
Ceiling-Height Sealed Glass
Steam enclosures must completely seal when closed. Glass is templated after tile and installed with steam-rated seals and an operable transom or door gasket system.
Commissioning
We run your new steam shower through several sessions to verify every seal under live steam, check every control. Once happy, we walk you through the operation of the unit, along with explaining the generator's maintenance schedule.

Steam Shower Installation in Older Homes
- There are several challenges in installing a steam shower into an older home. This is why you need a construction company on the job, rather than an installer with a kit. Here are some of the issues you might face:
- Every challenge is scopeable. We plan for all of it before demolition begins, not during it.
Panel Capacity
Steam showers need a 240V dedicated circuit, and this can be difficult to achieve with an older electrical panel, which are often crowded. We assess the panel during the consultation and include any upgrades or other needs in our quote, so there are no surprises when it comes to installation.
Finding the Generator a Home
Modern homes may have a mechanical closet perfect for housing the generator, but older homes are unlikely to have a purpose-built spot like that. We create generator sites, fabricating suitable storage within the home that allows for easy maintenance access.
Ceiling Heights and Framing
Older bathrooms sometimes have low or irregular ceilings. While steam showers can work fine with lower ceilings, they need perfectly crafted sloes to avoid drips and ensure the condensation runs off smoothly. New ceiling panels often need to be inserted.
Ventilation for the Rest of the Bathroom
A steam shower keeps its vapor inside the enclosure during use, but the bathroom still needs a properly ducted exhaust fan for when the door opens. In older homes, this often requires new ducting to the outside, which we include in our quote.
Plaster, Party Walls, and Old Framing
The steam enclosure has to be perfectly sealed to keep steam inside, regardless of what the surrounding walls are made of. We build around the existing surfaces to create that seal with custom fitting.
- Daily Ownership
What Is Owning a Steam Shower Actually Like?
Steam bathing has been around a long time, and for a reason. Here’s why people love it:
The Wellness Case
Regular users of steam showers often talk about how it helps with sore muscles and joint stiffness. Others mention the easier breathing during congestion, better skin, and a wind-down ritual that genuinely improves sleep. Steam showers improve your quality of life, every day.
Remarkable Water Efficiency
A steam session only uses a gallon or two of water. This is a fraction of what you would use in a tub. When you turn the steam off, the shower works the same as every other normal shower.
A Distinctive Primary Bath Feature
Steam showers look great, and as a centerpiece of your bathroom remodel, they give a custom feel that you don’t get from anything else.
Easy Maintenance
Your steam shower generator benefits from periodic flushing, and the controls may occasionally need attention, but in general, they are incredibly easy to live with. Stone surfaces need scheduled sealing if you choose stone, but that can be avoided by using porcelain tiling. We provide a simple maintenance schedule at commissioning.
Who Uses It Most
Anyone really. Athletes and those with physically demanding jobs enjoy the muscle relaxing experience, and if you have allergies or sinus issues, the steam can really help. But it's an enjoyable experience for everyone, we can all gain something from it.
Built-In Serviceability
Generator placement is designed for access. Controls, seals, and lines are all reachable. Our steam showers are designed for ease of ownership from the ground up.

What Affects Steam Shower Installation Cost.
Every steam shower installation is unique, and we quote you for the specific work needed to install in your home. These are the things that affect that cost.
New Build vs. Conversion
If the shower or entire room is being remodeled anyway, much of the prep work is already being done, and that saves money. A conversion can be cheaper overall, but often requires significant work.
Generator Size and Brand Tier
The generator is sized by enclosure volume, ceiling height, exterior walls, and surface material. Choosing natural stone tiling means the generator has to work harder, and needs roughly double the size as a result, while premium controls also add to the cost.
Electrical Scope
A panel with spare capacity nearby avoids additional work. However, any panel upgrades or long circuit runs required for your install add to your costs.
Enclosure Size and Tile Selection
Larger enclosures require more materials, including membrane, tiles and a larger area of glass. Porcelain sits at the practical end of the tiling range, while natural stone raises material, generator, and lifetime maintenance costs due to its heat absorption and need for resealing maintenance.
Glass System
Because of the tight vapor seal needed, each glass installation is a custom creation. Transom options and door hardware choices can add to the cost.
Bench, Niche, and Comfort Features
The more features, the more cost. Bench upgrades, storage niches and so on are great for comfort and usability, but you must always balance luxury against overall cost.
Generator Placement
Placing the generator in a location adjacent to the shower keeps lines short. Remote placements may be more practical, especially in older homes, but add line runs and additional construction costs.
- One fixed written quote. We take all this into consideration when preparing your estimate. That way, you get one itemized quote, one number and no hidden extras. You can proceed with confidence knowing the price we say is the price you pay.

Steam Shower or Sauna: Which Fits Your Home?
Many clients arrive wanting "a sauna" and leave building a steam shower, or the reverse. Here is the practical comparison without the sales angle.
|
Steam Shower
|
Traditional Sauna
|
|
|---|---|---|
| Heat type | 110–120°F warm, moist steam | Dry heat, typically 150–195°F |
| Space required | Fits inside the shower footprint you already have | Dedicated room or large closet-sized space |
| Doubles as | Your everyday shower | Nothing — single-purpose space |
| Best for | Congestion, skin, moist-heat preference, space-limited homes | Dry-heat lovers, dedicated wellness rooms |
| Water per session | A gallon or two | None |
| Construction demands | Vapor-sealed enclosure, dedicated circuit, sloped ceiling | Insulated room, wood interior, dedicated circuit |
| Project type | Bathroom construction project | Room construction project |
- If you have a spare room and love dry heat, a sauna is a wonderful thing. If you want daily heat therapy inside the bathroom you already have, the steam shower wins on space, versatility, and use frequency. Building the steam shower first is almost always the right order — it upgrades a room you use every day regardless.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from homeowners considering a Steam Shower Installation.
Can my existing shower be converted to a steam shower?
It depends. If it is a recently built shower with full waterproofing, and is able to accept a sloped ceiling, sealed glass, and vapor-sealing, then yes, it can. However, most existing showers need a rebuild to the studs because vapor-sealing cannot be added over finished tile, making conversion impractical.
Do I need a permit for a steam shower?
Yes, usually. This is because installing a steam shower involves a dedicated electrical circuit and plumbing work. We will assess the need for permits and take care of all applications and inspections for you.
How long does steam shower installation take?
Typically [X to X] weeks standalone, or [X to X] extra days when built into a larger bathroom remodel. Custom steam glass adds lead time at the end.
What tiles are best for a steam shower?
Porcelain. They are non-porous and mostly unaffected by heat and moisture, so they keep the generator's size down. Natural stone works if you want the style, but needs roughly double the generator capacity and routine sealing.
Where does the steam generator go?
In a dry, heated space within about 60 feet of the shower . We try to use something suitable already there, such as a vanity cabinet, closet, basement, or attic. The space must have room around it for ventilation and service access.
Is a steam shower hard to maintain?
No. The generator needs to be flushed every so often, but the enclosure cleans like any tiled shower. We provide a full maintenance schedule during handover.
Does a steam shower use a lot of water or electricity?
Steam showers are actually one of the most water efficient ways to enjoy hydrotherapy, using a couple of gallons of water in a session, much less than a tub for instance. However, the generator does draw significant power while running, although because sessions are short, the operating cost per session remains manageable.
Can the shower still be used as a normal shower?
Yes, every day. Steam only runs when you turn it on. The rest of the time it is simply a very well-built shower.
